Liturgy of the HoursThe Liturgy of the Hours, (or the Breviary, or the Divine Office) is the other official prayer of the Church outside of the mass. All clergy and religious are obligated to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Laypeople are encouraged to join in the Church's official prayer. Perhaps some of our older folks remember coming to Church for "Vespers." Vespers is simply the Latin name for Evening Prayer.
For the time being, each morning before 8AM mass, we will broadcast Morning Prayer at around 7:30AM. If you would like to follow along and join us, Father is using the "Divine Office" app which is available at the Android or Apple App Store. The one Father uses is "Divine Office by Surgeworks." There are a number of other apps available, you're welcome to use them, but don't panic if the hymn doesn't line up perfectly or if the translation on a line or two is slightly different. The app will prepare the prayers in the right order, saving a little bit of the confusion of praying the Liturgy of the Hours for the first time. On the other hand, if you have 1 Volume Christian Prayer and would like to use it, each morning Father will mention the page numbers needed for that day. On this page, we've included a couple of helpful videos describing what exactly the Liturgy of the Hours is, it's history, and some details if you'd like to get a physical book to pray it on your own or along with us. |
